My First Mac

While I used many an old-school computer (Apple IIs, early IBM PCs, etc.) during my formative years, this was the first machine I actually paid for myself (through lawn mowing and Great America season pass office work). Respect the 16Mhz.

Yesterday's Numbers

Sarah and I are both huge fans of conversation snippets (in the style of In Passing). I added Overheard in the Office to my feed list a while back, and as a result I'm treated to nuggets like this:

Suit #1: So did you get a chance to pull up yesterday's numbers?
Suit #2: all honesty I have been walking around holding a baseball all morning.

"After only a few minutes playing Nintendogs, you will appear -- to any outside observer -- to have completely lost your mind. You'll be shouting commands at your Nintendo DS, peering worriedly at your tiny computerized puppy and dutifully tapping the screen to pick up virtual dog poop. 'Sit, Tube! Sit!' I shouted at my pixilated dachshund, as my wife looked on in mild disbelief. I'd been at this for two days, people." Full story.

Belated Beach Pics

A gallery from a little while back. And don't adjust your farmer's tan really is that outrageous.

I think Jed will best appreciate this photo.

I'm posting this from the Leisure World Starbucks in Silver Spring, Maryland. It's adjacent to the Leisure World Giant (a supermarket so filled with retirees that it approaches magnificence).

Grandma's funeral is tomorrow, and emotions are running pretty high as more and more relatives arrive. It's extremely unnerving to go through all her possessions. A big mix of happy nostalgia and intense sadness. My sister and I had to go door to door in the apartment complex yesterday (to inform the neighbors). Wasn't fun.

Tonight we're going to watch some of her old video tapes, including Joanna's 16th birthday tape, which ranks high on Sarah's "all-time greatest videos ever recorded" list.

Biker Boyz

My grandmother just died.

It's sudden and completely unexpected. She was healthy, super active and one of the most positive people I've ever known. She even spent yesterday painting her new apartment and chatting with my mom on the phone.

My aunt stopped over to visit today and found her on the floor. We don't know any more details yet.

I'm totally stunned, but I'm trying to take a little comfort in the fact that she was able to have a wonderful visit with her great-grandchildren last month.

UPDATE: I've learned it was a sudden, massive heart attack or stroke, but thankfully they think it happened quickly. I'm flying out to Maryland on Wednesday to prepare for the funeral service. In the mean time, I've put together a little gallery to help Owen and Stew always remember their great grandma.

Wedding on the Queen Mary

It's a post like this that reminds us why we're DreamHost customers.

I've been playing around with a cool AJAX start page app called Protopage. I already use My Y! as my start page (I tried the customized Google one for a week, but found it to be missing the human editorial touch...damn machines), Backpack as my spare brain and to store specific articles/moments in time, so I'm essentially treating my Protopage as an online junk drawer. So far I'm a big fan.

Preschool Orientation (I'm an Old Man)

I'm a HUGE Apple/iTunes/iPod fan (hell, I went to the legendary Apple Icon Garden in Cupertino back in the day and got an email from Steve Jobs when I was in high school), but I have to say that the latest version of the Y! Music Engine is pretty damn impressive. Yeah it's PC-only and the subscription tracks won't work on iPods, but five bucks a month for nearly every song I could ever want makes for a pretty good cubicle soundtrack. And now there's a plugin for it. Done and done.

Too Awesome for a Title

This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen (found via Ariel).

Gore in 2005!

To show some support for THE R.O.D. I've set up a Current Studio page. Only one clip up right now, but I'll dig into the K. Ford archives this evening.

Birthday Weekend

Two kids on our street turned one year old this weekend. Here's a gallery from one of the parties. Note to those who've met Stewart: while the above photo attempts to capture his rage, it obviously doesn't do it justice. Apologies.

Fast Hands

I would LOVE to see this thing hand Dave his ass in a Mario Party button-tapping mini-game.
